June 2012 Week 2

Series Lesson: Continuity with E and Bridgette

All of June we’ll be offering a sampler of lessons featuring new teachers and topics each week. This week, E & Bridgette will be teaching. Their lesson description is as follows.

“Continuity is defined by three simple concepts:

1. A state of stability and the absence of disruption.

2. A connection or line of development.

3. The unbroken and consistent existence or operation of something over a period of time.

We strive for all three forms of continuity in aspects of our blues dance.

First, we must establish a state of stability and the absence of disruption within our bodies. We keep our balance to encourage stability throughout our body and remove any disruptions that interrupt the flow of movement through the many parts of our body, creating a frame with which to communicate our dance.

Second, we to develop a connection between the music and our movement. We choose movements that are appropriate for the style and form of the music. This encompasses both why we dance blues movements to blues music and how we perform these movements to compliment the music.

Third, we strive for an unbroken and consistent dance performance. As we perform a variety of movements that complement the music, it is essential to connect every movement, allowing each movement to flow one into the other, facilitated by a constant connection and awareness of our partner.

Using a series of simple and easy to understand exercises, we will develop these forms of continuity in our dance resulting in an expression of the blues that is unfettered by the constraints of expectation and disjointed movements, and is as vital and dynamic as the music that inspires it.”
